As we all know every year, there is usually a new fashion trend, inspired by Fashion Week, celebrities, influencers, and the lot. This year there are quite a few fashion trends; from the animal print trend to the neon trend to the pastels trend and of course the chunky trainer trend.
An insight into the chunky trainer trend
The chunky trainer, also known as dad trainer, ugly trainer and even trail sneaker has been getting a lot of attention. The 90’s trend reemerged on the runway during Autumn/ Winter Fashion Week 2018 and has since become the ‘ in thing’. Thanks to brands like Burberry, Nº21, MSGM, Balenciaga as well as the many celebrities from which the chunky trainer trend has gained its publicity.
“Fact: Did you know that the Spice Girls were one of the first celebrities to be seen wearing the chunky trainer?”
Why the chunky trainer?
There may be several probable reasons why the dad trainer has made its mark in the fashion world. From a personal perspective, this may be due to 2 main reasons:
- these trainers are very comfortable
- it is a versatile piece (in terms of styling)
Here is a list of the few ways that to style the chunky trainers:
1. With a dress
The dad trainers can be styled with a mini dress, midi dress, skater dress, t-shirt dress or with any other dress of your choice. Styling with a dress leaves you with a casual but chic look. This is a great outfit for the summer. See my summer outfits here.
For a smart/ casual look, pair your trainer with a tailored trouser and blazer or a suit co-ord. Keep the look casual by styling your trainer with a pair of jeans or any other trouser.
If you want to attain a sporty/ athleisure type look or you just want to be really comfortable, then simply put on cycling shorts or joggers. Again, this outfit style is ideal for the summer. Check out my summer outfits here.
You can choose to style your trainers with a mini, midi or maxi skirt depending on your style as well as the season.
Luckily, different brands have their own version of this trend and so it is possible for everyone to afford to own a pair irrespective of their bank account.
Whether this trend has come to stay, no one can say for sure. But, it is a trend and like most trends, they tend to fade after a while to be replaced with newer and fresher trends. So let’s make the most of it while it’s still here.
